Erectile dysfunction can be an incredibly embarrassing and difficult condition to live with. Even if it only happens on occasion, being unable to perform in the most intimate moments can be crushing to a person's self-esteem and also harmful to relationships. Thus, many men do not seek help when they should. Instead, they stress about whether they will be able to perform the next time.
This can only make the problem worse since stress is a contributing factor to dysfunction. Essentially, the issue can easily snowball out of control to where the dysfunction is more common than being able to perform. Knowing that it is important to get ahead of the problem, start treating this condition with a visit to our office.
Erectile dysfunction is very common
A study by the Cleveland Clinic found the following:
- Many men under 40 suffer from ED, up to 40 percent
- One in four new ED patients are under 40
- By the age of 70, 70 percent of men suffer from ED
- Smoking is positively correlated with ED
- ED can be caused by physical or emotional problems
- Sexual function can significantly decline after the age of 50
Common causes of erectile dysfunction
Each man will have a different reason for experiencing erectile dysfunction and in some cases, there could be multiple factors leading to the problem. However, some of the common ones are:
- Exhaustion or lack of sleep
- Prescription medications
- Heart problems
- Emotional distress or depression
- Loss of testosterone
Since there are multiple factors that can lead to dysfunction, it is important for us to schedule a consultation and go over the patient's full medical history. We will also ask questions in regard to a patient's lifestyle so that we can identify any and all factors that may be contributing to the problem. This is absolutely necessary for coming up with a comprehensive treatment plan.
Treating erectile dysfunction
There are a variety of ways that we can address this issue. First, if we notice that something could be leading to it, like taking a certain prescription drug, it may be advisable to reduce exposure to that factor. For example, a physician may be able to substitute a particular drug with a different one. Likewise, we will point out any lifestyle changes that can be made, such as getting additional sleep at night.
After making these basic and obvious changes, it will be time to treat a loss of testosterone. Testosterone replacement therapy is incredibly effective and we often recommend it to patients. While we recommend the HOPE Protocol&trade, we may make a different recommendation after completing our consultation and exam.
